The present myth from Greek mythology introduces two people, Echo and Narcissus. Their names have a meaning in the myth that has carried over to our present day language. The given piece has been rendered in English by MOIRA KERR AND JOHN BENETT.
प्रस्तुत दन्त कथा ग्रीक पौराणिक विज्ञान से ली गई है। यह ‘इको और नरसीरम कथा को मोयरा केर और जॉन बेनेट द्वारा अंग्रेजी भाषा में रूपांतरित किया गया है। इसमें दो व्यक्तियों को पात्र के रूप में रखकर महत्वपूर्ण तथा सारगर्मित संदेश दिया गया है।
ECHO AND NARCISSUS
1.Not many men, or even gods, were as handsome as young Narcissus. So fair was he that almost everyone who saw him fell in love with him that moment.
कोई आदमी वया, देवता भी युवा नरसीसस की तरह सुंदर नहीं
वह इतना सुदर था कि जब भी कोई अक्सर उसे देखता था उसा क्षण उससे प्यार करने लगता था।
2.One day, as Narcissus roamed the forests with his hunting companions, he was spied by the watchful nymph Echo. She had once been a great chatterer, ready o talk to any passer-by on any subject at any time, and on several occasions she had detained goddess Hera with hours of casual talks, just as Hera was on the point of stumbling upon Zeus with one of his illicit loves. Eventually Hera grew so annoyed that she put a curse on Echo, and from that time on the unfortunate nymph could say nothing but the last few words that she heard.
एक दिन, नरसीसस अपने शिकारी साथियों के साथ जंगल में घूम रहा था, वह सुदर युवती इको द्वारा सावधानीपूर्ण जासूसी किया जा रहा था। वह बहुत बक-बक करती पा, वह किसी से भी किसी भी विषय पर और कभी भी वातालाप क लिए तैयार रहती पा आर अनेक अवसरों पर उसने देवी हीरा को घटों तक बकार का बाता में अटका लता था, जैसा कि हीरा जेसस के साथ अवैध प्रेम पर अवरोध के बिन्दु पर थी। इस प्रकार, हीरा इतना अधिक नाखुश हो गई कि उसने इको को शाप दे दिया, और उस समय से अभागी सुंदर युवती कुछ नहीं कह सकी, परन्तु अन्तिम के कुछ शब्द उसे याद थे, जिसे वह सुनती थी।
3.Trembling, Echo followed Narcissus through the trees. She longed to go closer to him to gaze upon the beauty of his face, but she feared that he would laugh at her silly speech. Before long, Narcissus wandered away from his companions, and when he realised he was lost, he called in panic. “Is there anybody here?”
कॉपती, इको ने पेड़ों की आड़ से नरसीसस का पीछा किया। वह उसके चेहरा की सुंदरता नजदीक से जाकर निहारना चाहती थी, लेकिन डरती थी। कि वह उसकी बुद्धिहीन बातों पर हँसेगा। लम्बी दूरी के बाद, नरसीरास अपने साथियों । से अलग मार्ग भटक गया है, और जब उसने महसूस किया कि वह भटक गया, तब उसने आतंक से आवाज लगाई, “यहाँ कोई है ?”

4.”Here!” called Echo.
“यहाँ!” इको ने आवाज दी।
5.Mystified by this reply, Narcissus shouted. ‘Come!”
इस जवाब से विस्मित, नरसीसस चिल्लाया, “आओ’ । ।
6.“Come!” shouted Echo.
“आओ” । इको चिल्लायी।
7.Narcissus was convinced that someone was playing trick on him.
नरसीसस समझता था कि कोई उससे चाल चल रहा था।
8.”Why are you avoiding me?” he called. The only answer he heard was his own question repeated from the woods.
“तुम मुझे क्यों तिरष्कार कर रहे हो?’ उसने कहा । उसने केवल अपने सवालों को जो लकड़ियों से पुनरावृत्त हो रही थी को जवाब में सुना।।
9 “Come here, and let us meet!” pleaded Narcissus.
‘यहाँ आओं, और हमें मिलना चाहिए।” नरसीसस ने तर्क दिया।
10.”Let us meet!” Echo answered, delighted.
“हमें मिलना चाहिए।” इको ने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक जवाब दिया।
11.She overcame her shyness, and crept from her biding place to approach Narcissus. But he, satisfied now that he had solved the mystery of the voice, roughly pushed her away and ran.
उसने अपने संकोच पर काबू पाया और अपने को छुपे स्थान से नरसीराम मिलने हेतु बाहर निकली। परन्तु वह अब संतुष्ट हो गयी कि उसने ध्वनि की जटिल का हल कर दिया था, निर्ममतापूर्ण उसे बाहर धक्का दिया और दौड़ पड़ा।
12.”I would die Before I would have you near me!” he shouted mockingly over his shoulder.
“मैं तुम्हें अपने नजदीक पाऊँगा, उससे पहले मर जाऊँगा” उसने अपने कंधे के ऊपर उपहास करते चिल्लाया।
13.Helpless, Echo had to call after bin, “I would have you near me!”
असहाय, उसके बाद पुकारने के लिए बाध्य थी, “मैं तुम्हें अपने पास पाऊँगी।”

14.The nymph was so embarrassed and ashamed that she hid herself in a dark cave, and never came into the air and sunlight again. Her youth and beauty withered away, and her body became so shrunken and tiny that eventually she vanished altogether. All that was left was the pathetic voice that still roams the world, anxious to talk, yet able only to repeat what others say.
सुंदरती इतना परेशान और लज्जित हुई कि उसने अपने आप को एक अधेरी गुफा में छुपा लिया और हवा और सूर्य की रोशनी में दोबारा कभी नहीं आई। उसकी जवानी और सुंदरता गुझा गई और उसका शरीर इतना सिकुड़ और छोटा हो गया कि वह पूरी तरह से खत्म हो गई। वे सभी जो बचे थे वे मर्मस्पर्शी ध्वनि थी जो अभी भी संसार में भ्रमण करती थी, वाचती के लिए बेचैन, अब केवल दूसरा क्या कहता है को पुनरावृत्ति करने में सक्षम ।
15.Poor Echo was not the only one to be treated brutally by Narcissus. He had played with many hearts, and at last one of those he had scorned prayed to the gods that Narcissus would some day find himself’ scorned by one he loved. The prayer was heard, and granted.
बेचारी इको अकेली नहीं थी जो नरसीसस के वृणित व्यवहार का शिकार थी। उसने बहुत दिलों से खेला था और अन्त में उनमें से एक जिससे उसने घृणा की थी, ईश्वर से प्रार्थना किया कि नरसीसस कुछ दिन अपने को घृणित गाए जिसे वह प्यार करता हो। प्रार्थना सुन ली गई और मंजूर कर दी गई।

16.Tired and thirsty from his hunting, Narcissus threw himself down beside a still, clear pool to drink. As he leaned over the shining surface, he saw the reflection of the most beautiful face he had ever seen. His heart trembled at the sight, and he could not tear himself away from it – his own image.
शिकार से थका और प्यासा, नरसीसस एक शांत, रवन्छ पोखर के बगल में पानी पीने के लिए खड़ा हो गया। जैसे ही उसने चमकते पानी की सतह की तरफ झुका उसने अति सुंदर चेहरे का परावर्तन देखा जिसे वह कभी नहीं देखा था। दृश्य देखकर उसका दिल कापने लगा और इससे अलग वह ऑसू नहीं बहा सका-अपना तस्वीर पर।
17.For a long time Narcissus remained there beside the pool, never raising his eyes from the surface, and from time to time murmuring words of love. At last his body withered away and became the stem of a flower, and his head the lovely gold and white blossom which still looks into quiet pools, and is called Narcissus.
