A twenty-five kilo load on his back
spine double bent
a six-mile climb up in the snows of winter
naked bones, skeleton- like frail frame
yet facing an uphill task
he is challenging the mountain.
अपनी पीठ पर पचीस किलो वजन लिए
रीढ़ की हड्डी दुहरी मुड़ी हुई
जाड़े की वर्फ में छह मील की चढ़ाई
खुली हड्डियाँ, हड्डियों के भंगुर ढ़ाँचे के समान
फिर भी चढ़ाई की कठिनाई का सामना करता हुआ
वह पर्वत को ललकार रहा हैा
He is wearing a black cap
dirty, sweat-stained
his body is an abode of fleas and lice
his mind very dull
although it emits a sulphur-like sour smell
but what a stout human figure!
वह पहने हुए है काली टोपी
गन्दी पसिने से दागदार
उसका शरीर है लीखो और जुओं का घर
उसकर दिमाग है बहुत मन्द
फिर यह छोड़ता है गंधक जैसा खट्टा गन्ध
किन्तु क्या ही सख्ज मानव शरीर है।
Like a bird
his heart is twittering, panting
he is sweating and out of breath
पक्षी की तरह
उसका सीना धड़क रहा, हाँफ रहा है
वह पसिने से भीगा और बेदम है।
A hut on the cliff
his son shivering with cold
woes of hunger
the mother searching for nettles and vines.
दर्रे में एक घर
उसका पुत्र जाड़े से काँप रहा है
भू की खिन्नता / भय है
माँ खोज रही है चिपचिपा पौधा और अंगर की लता।
Beneath this hero of the mountain
the proud conqueror of nature
are the snow-clad peaks
above
पर्वत के इस नायक
प्रकृत के गर्वीला विजेता के नीचे
है वे वर्फ में लिपटी चोटियाँ
उपर हैं
only the star-studded lid of night.
In this night
the porter is in deep slumber
“reigning over the rich kingdom of sleep.
केवल रात के तारों से गुँथे ढक्कन
इस रात में
वह कुली है गहरी नींद में
नींद के समृद्ध साम्राज्य पर शासन करता।
