TESS BUYS A MIRACLE
पाठ का परिचय–यह पाठ एक सरल छोटी-सी लड़की, तेस, से सम्बद्ध है। वह बहुत भावुक थी। वह अपने भाई एंड की बीमारी से बहुत दुखी थी और उसके निश्छल प्रयास ने उसके भाई के इलाज में चमत्कार की तरह काम किया।
One day eight-year-old Tess overheard her parents talking about her little brother Andrew. She came to know that Andrew was very sick and that her parents didn’t have enough money for his treatment. Tess heard her father say: “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess started thinking about what she had heard. She went to her room and took out a jar from her cupboard. There were some coins in it. She counted the money carefully.
वाक्यार्थ—एक दिन आठ वर्ष की तेस ने अपने माता-पिता को अपने छोटे भाई एंड्र के बारे में बातचीत करते सुना । उसे जानकारी हुई कि एंडू बहुत बीमार थी और उसके माता-पिता को इलाज के लिए काफी पैसे नहीं थे। तेस अपने पिता को कहते सुना : “केवल चमत्कार ही अब उसे बचा सकता है।”
“तेस ने जो सुना उसके बारे में सोचना शुरू किया। वह अपने कमरे में गयी और अलमारी से एक जार निकाला । उसमें कुछ सिक्के थे। उसने सावधानी से रुपयों को गिना ।

Then Tess put the money into a purse and made her way to a drugstore. The chemist saw her but didn’t pay her any attention. When Tess continued to stand before the counter, he said to her, sounding rather annoyed, “What do you want? I’m talking to my brother who has just arrived from Chicago!”
“I want to buy a miracle,” said Tess. “My brother Andrew is really sick. He has something bad growing inside his head and my father says that only a miracle can save him now. Can you tell me how much miracle costs?”?
The chemist’s brother, a well-dressed man, had heard the conversation between his brother and the little girl. He turned to Tess and asked, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?”
वाक्यार्थ– तब तेस ने उन रुपयों को थैली में रखा और एक दवाखाना का रास्ता पकड़ी। दवा बेचनेवाले ने उसे देखा किन्तु उसपर ध्यान नहीं दिया। जब तेस काउंटर के आगे खड़ी रही, उसने कुछ चिढ़ते हुए कहा, “तुम क्या चाहती हो ? मैं अपने भाई से बातचीत कर रहा हूँ जो अभी तुरंत शिकागो से आया है!”
“मैं एक चमत्कार खरीदना चाहती हूँ”, तेस ने कहा, “मेरा भाई एंड वास्तव में बीमार है। उसके सिर में अन्दर कुछ गलत चीज बढ़ रही है और मेरे पिता कहते हैं कि उसे कोई चमत्कार ही बचा सकता है। क्या आप बता सकते हैं चमत्कार की क्या कीमत है?”
उस दवा-निर्माता का भाई जो सजा-धजा था उसने उस छोटी लड़की और अपने भाई की बातचीत सुनी थी। वह तेस की ओर मुड़ा और बोला, “तुम्हारा भाई कैसा चमत्कार चाहता है?”
“Don’t know,” replied Tess, her eyes full of tears. “He’s really sick and Mummy says he needs an operation. But Dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my own money.”
“How much money do you have asked the well-dressed man.
“One dollar and eleven cents,” replied Tess.
“Wonderful!” said the man, smiling. “A dollar and eleven cents – that’s the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.” He took Tess’s money in one hand and held her hand with the other, saying, “Take me to your house. I want to see your brother. Let me see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

वाक्यार्थ— “नहीं जानती’, तेस ने उत्तर दिया, उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भरी थीं। वह सही में बीमार है और मम्मी कहती है कि उसका ऑपरेशन होना चाहिए। किन्तु पिता उतना खर्च नहीं कर सकते, इसलिए मैं अपना पैसा खर्च करना चाहती हूँ।
“तुम्हारे पास कितने रुपये हैं ?” उस सजे-धजे व्यक्ति ने पूछा। “एक डॉलर और ग्यारह सेण्ट”, तेस ने उत्तर दिया।
“चामत्कारिक!” उस व्यक्ति ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, “एक डॉलर और ग्या सेण्ट-वह तुम्हारे भाई के लिए चमत्कार की सही कीमत है।” उसने एक हाथ से तेस का रुपया लिया और दूसरे हाथ से उसका हाथ पकड़ा यह कहते हुए, “मुझे अपने घर ले चलो। मैं तुम्हारे भाई को देखना चाहता हूँ। मुझे देखने दो मेरे पास तुम्हारे योग्य चमत्कार है या नहीं।’
The chemist’s brother was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous neurosurgeon. He had Andrew admitted to hospital, where he operated on him. Within a few weeks Andrew was back at home and was doing well.
One day Tess’s mother said to her husband, “I wonder how much Andrew’s surgery cost. Dr. Armstrong wouldn’t take any money from us!”
On hearing this, Tess smiled to herself. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost. One dollar and eleven cents ….. plus the faith of a little child.
वाक्यार्थ–उस दवा-निर्माता का भाई एक विख्यात तंत्रिका-शल्य-चिकित्सक डॉ. कार्लटन आर्मस्ट्रांग था। उसने एंड्र को अस्पताल में भर्ती करा दिया, जहाँ उसने उसका ऑपरेशन किया । कुछ ही हफ्ते बाद एंडू घर वापस आ गया और अच्छा हो गया ।
एक दिन तेस की माँ ने अपने पति से कहा, “मैं चकित हूँ कि एंड के सर्जरी में कितना खर्च हुआ। डॉ. आर्मस्ट्रांग ने हमलोगों से कोई पैसा नहीं लिया।
