MEASURE FOR MEASURE
पाठ का परिचय– ‘मीजर फॉर मीजर’ शिक्षाप्रद कहानी है। यह छात्रों को सिखाती है कि कैसे कोई सामाजिक समस्या बिना विरोध के सुलझायी जा सकती है। कहानी में, राजा कृष्णदेव राय बहुत आसानी से अपना दोष मान लेते हैं और इसका ज्ञान होने पर राजा वर्मा, मुख्यमंत्री, स्वयं पद से इस्तीफा दे देते हैं।
Krishna Deva Raya was known for his patronage of poets and scholars. He was equally fond of fine arts. Once he came to know about a brilliant artist named Raja Varma. He invited Raja Varma to the court and asked him to draw his portrait.
The king was very pleased with the artist when his portrait was ready.. In the portrait, the majestic and handsome king seemed to have come alive within the frame.
वाक्यार्थ–कृष्णदेव राय कवियों और विद्वानों को अपना संरक्षण देने के लिए जाने । जाते थे। वह उसी प्रकार ललित कला का प्रेमी था। एक बार उन्हें राजा वर्मा नाम के मेधावी कलाकार की जानकारी मिली। उन्होंने राजा वर्मा को दरबार में आने का आग्रह किया तथा अपनी तसवीर बनाने को कहा।
जब उनकी तसवीर तैयार हुई तो राजा उस कलाकार से बहुत खुश हुआ। उस तस्वीर में वह शानदार और खूबसूरत राजा फ्रेम के अन्दर सजीव आया हुआ लगता था।

Apart from this portrait Raja Varma drew images of famous characters from Puranas, of men and women, and so on. He became well known for his skills. He became close and dear to the king.
Overwhelmed by joy, Krishna Deva Raya called the artist and asked him what he wanted. When Raja Varma did not reply, the king, on the spur of a generous impulse, rewarded him with the chief ministership.
वाक्यार्थ— इससे अलग राजा वर्मा ने पुराणों के विख्यात व्यक्तियों, मनुष्यों और औरता हुत्यादि की छवियाँ बनाई। वे अपनी दक्षता के लिए सुविख्यात हो गए। वे राजा के करीबी और प्रिय हो गए ।
खुशी से मुग्ध कृष्णदेव राय ने उस कलाकार को बुलाया और उन्हें क्या चाहिए या का। जब राजा वर्मा ने कुछ नहीं कहा, उस राजा ने उन्हें लापरवाही से मुख्यमंत्री के पट से पुरस्कृत किया ।
Though Raja Varma was a good man and a brilliant artist, he had no experience, whatsoever, of administration. Soon everything was thrown into disorder because of his hasty decisions and bad management of the state affairs. Though people were unhappy about his administration, they did not dare complain to the king because the king was very fond of him.
The elders of the town finally approached and sought Tenali Raman’s help in getting rid of the new and inept chief minister.
Tenali Raman assured them, “I shall soon find a harmless way to remove the artist from the ministership.”
After a few weeks, Tenali Raman invited the king, the queens and some courtiers to his house for lunch. Meanwhile, he found a very good carpenter and put him on the job of preparing a grand feast for the king.
वाक्यार्थ—हालाँकि राजा वर्मा अच्छा आदमी और मेधावी कलाकार था, किन्तु उसे प्रशासन का कुछ भी अनुभव नहीं था। उसके उतावले निर्णय और राजकाज की गलत व्यवस्था के कारण शीघ्र सबकुछ अव्यवस्थित हो गया। हालाँकि लोग उसके प्रशासन से नाखुश थे लेकिन वे राजा से शिकायत करने का साहस नहीं कर पाते थे, क्योंकि राजा को उससे बहुत प्रेम था। शहर के बुजुर्गों ने अन्ततः नए और अकुशल मुख्यमंत्री से छुटकारा पाने के लिए तेनाली रामन के पास पहुँचकर मदद की गुहार लगायी।
तेनाली रामन ने उन्हें विश्वास दिलाया. “मैं शीघ्र उस कलाकार को मंत्रीनद से हटाने के लिए हानिरहित रास्ता पा लूँगा।”
कुछ सप्ताह बाद, तेनाली रामन ने उस राजा, उसकी रानियो और कुछ दरबारियों को अपने घर भोजन के लिए बुलाया । इसी बीच, उसे एक बहुत अच्छा बढ़ई खोजा और उसे राजा के लिए शानदार भोज तैयार करने के लिए ।
The king and others sat for lunch and at Tenali Raman’s order, the carpenter began serving them. As soon as they put the first morsel of food in their mouths, the people began to request for water again and again.
Soon after tasting the food, the king realised that the food was badly cooked and was unbearably hot. He was angry.
“Raman, who has cooked this food? Do you want all to suffer and die by eating this horrible food?”
In his usual humble way Tenali Raman said, “I beg your Majesty’s forgiveness.” Then he showed carpenter to the king. I have never come across such an excellent carpenter, and I have put him on the job of cooking the lunch for today’s feast.”
वाक्यार्थ-राजा तथा अन्य लोग भोजन करने बैठे तथा तेनाली रामन के आदेश पर बढ़ई उन्हें परोसने लगा। ज्यों ही उन्हेनि खाने का पहला कौर मुंह में रखा, वे लोग पानी-पानी आग्रह करने लगे।
खाना चखने के तुरंत बाद, राजा ने महसूस किया कि खाना बुरी तरह बना था और असहनीय गर्म था। वह क्रोधित हो गया। की “रामन, यह खाना किसने बनाया है ? क्या तुम चाहते हो कि इस अप्रिय खाना खाकर भुगतें और मरें ?”
अपने सामान्य नम्र तरीके से तेनाली रामन ने कहा, “मैं महामहिम से माफी चाहता हूँ।” तब उसने राजा से बढ़ई को दिखाया। मुझे बढ़ई से बढ़िया रसोइया नहीं मिला और मैंने उसे आज के भोज के लिए खाना बनाने के काम पर रख लिया है।’
The king began laughing loudly. “Have you lost all sense, Raman? A good carpenter should be employed to work on wood but not on food. How did you get this funny idea?”
Tenali Raman asked the king, “Lord! If an artist can become a chief minister, can’t a carpenter become a cook?”
The king at once understood that Tenali Raman got a carpenter to cook the food to make him realise his error in making Raja Varma the chief minister.
वाक्यार्थ-राजा जोर से हँसने लगा, “रामन, क्या तुमने सब ज्ञान खो दिया ? कोई अच्छा बढ़ई लकड़ी के काम पर लगाया जाना चाहिए, खाना बनाने में नहीं । तुम्हें यह अजीब विचार कैसे मिला?” __तेनाली रामन ने राजा से कहा, “मालिक। अगर एक कलाकार मुख्यमंत्री हो सकता है तो क्या एक बढ़ई रसोइया नहीं हो सकता?”
राजा तुरंत समझ गया कि तेनाली रामन ने उसे राजा वर्मा को मुख्यमंत्री बनाए जाने की उसकी भूल महसूस कराने के लिए बढ़ई को खाना बनाने के लिए रखा था।
The king was saved from the embarrassment of removing Raja Varma from the post because when Raja Varma came to know about the awkward incident at Raman’s house, he immediately resigned from the post.
Later Raja Varma told Tenali Raman that he was happy to remain an artist!
वाक्यार्थ-राजा राजा वर्मा को पद से हटाने के दोष से बचा लिया गया क्योंकि जब राजा वर्मा ने तेनाली रामन के घर की अप्रिय घटना के बारे में जाना, उसने तुरंत 1 पद से त्यागपत्र दे दिया।
बाद में राजा वर्मा ने तेनाली रामन से कहा कि वह कलाकार रहने में खुश था।
