Bseb Class 10th English Poetry Chapter 5 THE EMPTY HEART
The man was rich, but not content.
Morning, noon and night he went
To the Wish-yielding Tree and prayed:
‘O Kalpaka, I seek your aid;
All I want is a pot of gold.’
His prayer was granted sevenfold:
For as a gift to him was given,
Glistening gold in pitchers seven.
Seven silver pitchers were now with him
Each with gold coins filled to the brim.
But the Tree unkind took into its mind
To add an eighth, a half-full pot.
वह व्यक्ति धनी था, किन्तु संतुष्ट नही।
सुबह, दोपहर और शाम वह जाता
इच्छापूरक पेड़ के पास और प्रार्थना करता:
हे कल्पाका, मैं आपकी मदद चाहता हूँ:
मेरी इच्छा एक सोने को घड़ा है।
उसक प्रार्थना सतगुना मंजूर हुई:
उसे एक उपहार दिया गया,
सात घड़ें में चमचमाता सोना।
अब उसके साथ ये सात चाँदी के घड़े
हरेक किनारे (गर्दन) तक सोने के सिक्कों से भरा
किन्तु पेड़ निर्दयी है ऐसा उसके मन में घर कर गया
एक आठवाँ देने पर, आधा भर घड़ा।
To fill this quick was his thought;
The seven full vessels he clean forgot,
The demon Desire now made him mad.
To mother, wife, children ‘good bye’ he bade
He rose before cock-crow, past midnight he worked;
Eating, drinking and sleep he shirked.
He wrecked his health, his conscience sold
And tried all tricks to gather gold.
इसे तुरंत भरना उसकी इच्छा थी,
सात भरे घड़े को वह साफ भूल गया,
दुष्ट इच्छा ने अब उसे पागल उसे पागल कर दिया।
माँ, पत्नी, बच्चे सबको उसने ‘अलविदा’ किया।
मुर्गे की बाँग के पहले वह जगता, आधी रात के बाद तक काम करता,
खाना, पीना और सोने की अवहेलना की।
अपना स्वास्थ्य उसने नष्ट कर लिया, उसकी अन्तरात्मा बिक गयी
और सोना जमा करने की सब योजना अपनाई।
Eager and anxious he shamelessly took
Each coin he could clutch by hook or crook.
Harder and harder he tried, but died
Before he could quite fill the pot.
Greed and endless, but life is not.
Nothing is wrong with a half-filled purse;
“Tis the void in the heart that is the curse.
उत्सुक और चिन्तित उसने निर्लज्जता से अपनाया,
एक-एक सिक्का उसने जैसे-तैसे हासिल किया
कठिन से कठिन प्रयास उसने किया, पर मर गया
जब तक वह पूरा-पूरा घड़ा भर सकता उसके पहले।
लालच अनन्त है, किन्तु जान नहीं।
आधी भरी थैली में कोई दोष नहीं
दिल का खालीपन ही अभिशाप है।
