RAY YOUNG BEAR (b.1950) is a Native American poet and novelist of the Mesquaki tribe of North America. Growing up on the Mesquaki Tribal Settlement in lowa, he was encouraged to learn English by his maternal grandmother, und he began to translate his poems into that language. His work was first published in 1968. He often switches between English and the Meskwaki language to express himself more fully in the present poem, “The Grandmother”, he draws a picture of his grandmother, all-loving and all-inspiring.
राय यंग बियर (जन्म 1950) अमेरिका में जन्मे कवि और उतरी अमेरिका के मेस्काकी वर्ग के उपन्यासकार है। इओवा में मेस्काकीबर्ग में बसे और बड़े हुए, उनको उनकी दादी ने अंग्रेजी सीखने के लिए उत्साहित किया और उन्होंने अपनी कविताओं को अंग्रेजी भाषा में अनुवाद करना शुरू कर दिया। उनकी पहली रचना 1968 में प्रकाशित हुई। वे प्रायः अपने मन की बातें पूरी तरह कहने के लिए अंग्रेजी और मेरकाकी भाषा के बीच बदल देते थे। प्रस्तुत कविता ‘The Grandmother’ में, उन्होंने अपनी दादी माँ की तस्वीर खींची है, बिल्कुल प्यारा और प्रेरणादायक।

if I were to see
her shape from a mile away
I’d know so quickly
that it would be her
the purple scarf
and the plastic
shopping bag.
if i felt
hands on my head
I’d know that those
were her hands
warm and damp

a voice

and her words

मैं उसको जान जाता

सोये हुए आग से

सुनता मैं जग जाता कि ये उसके शब्द हैं।
जो मेरे अंदर उस प्रकाश की भाँति

हलचल पैदा करनेवाले धुएँ
