A SILENT REVOLUTION
1.Short Messaging Service or SMS was conceived as a part of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) digital standard. It is the ability to send and receive text massages (alphanumeric) at a mobile phone. SMS, like e-mail, is a store and forward service that utilizes gateways to send messages from senders to the recipients.
साक्षप्त सदेश सेवा या एस. एम. एस. मोबाइल संचार के अंकीय स्तर के भूमडीय पद्धति के एक भाग के रूप में कल्पना की गई थी। यह मोबाइल फोन पर मूल संदेश (वर्णमाला के संख्यांक) को भेजने और ग्रहण करने की क्षमता है। एस. एम. एस., e-मेल की तरह, संग्रह और आगे बढ़ाने की सेवा है जो संदेश भेजनेवाले और प्राप्तकर्ता के बीच एक प्रकार से द्वार के रूप में उपयोग की जाती है।
2.However, messages are not sent directly from the sender to the receiver but are routed through a Short Messaging Service Centre, (SMSC) run by the service provider. This ensures that the message is delivered at the destination mobile even if it is switched off or out of the coverage area. The SMSC stores the message and forwards it when the mobile is switched on or enters the network. Normally, messages are delivered instantly but at times there can be delay of some hours due to congestion.
इस प्रकार, संदेश सीधे भेजनेवाले से ग्रहण करनेवाले को नहीं भेजे जाते, परन्तु यह संक्षिप्त संदेश सेवा केन्द्र (एस. एम. एस. सी.) के मार्ग से सेवादाता द्वारा भेजी जाती है। यह निश्चित करती है कि गणतव्य स्थान के मोबाइल के लिए संदेश भेजे गए हैं चाहे मोबाइल बंद हो या नेटवर्क क्षेत्र से बाहर हो। एस. एम. एस. सी. संदेश को एकत्रित रखती है और जब मोबाइल का स्वीच खुलता है या नेटवर्क क्षेत्र में आता है तो इसे उक्त मोबाइल को भेज देती है। साधारणतया संदेश तुरंत भेज दिए जाते हैं परन्तु कभी अत्यधिक भीड़ के कारण कुछ घंटों की देरी हो सकती है।

3.The beauty of SMS is that messages can be sent and received even while making voice calls. This is possible because a voice call takes over a dedicated radio channel for the duration of the call, while the short messages travel over and above the radio channel using the signalling path.

From the first short message, believed to have been sent in December 1992 from a PC to a mobile phonc on the Vodafone GSM network in the UK, SMS has come a long way today.

8.Judging by its success, at present not many would believe that SMS had a very silent beginning. Not even the cellular operators could comprehend the potential of this sleepy technology initially and cared little to advertise it as an attraction for mobile users. However, all that is history now. Today every market player, from cellular operators to mobile handset manufactures, is keen to capture its share of the pie. Nokia recently launched the first Hindi compatible handsets3350, to give its use, the option of sending messages in Hindi.
