YAYATI
1. Emperor Yayati was one of the ancestors of the Pandavas. He had never known defeat. He followed the dictates of the sastras, adored the gods and venerated his ancestors with intense devotion. He became famous as a ruler devoted to the welfare of his subjects.
सम्राट यायाती पाण्डवों के एक पूर्वज थे। उन्होंने कभी भी हारना नहीं सीखा (जाना) था। वह शास्त्रों के निर्देश, देवताओं की पूजा और अपने पूर्वजों को आदर प्रबल स्नेह करते थे। उन्होंने अपनी प्रजा की भलाई के लिए समर्पित शासक के रूप में प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त कर ली थी।
2.He became prematurely old by the curse of Sukracharya for having wronged his wife Devayani. In the words of the poet of the Mahabharata: “Yayati attained that old age which destroys beauty and brings on miseries.” It is needless to describe the misery of vigorous youth suddenly blighted into age, where the horrors of loss are accentuated by pangs of recollection.
वे अपनी पत्नी देवयानी की गलती के कारण शुक्राचार्य के श्राप से असमय बूढ़ा हो गये। महाभारत के कवि के शब्दों में “यायाती ने उस बुढ़ापा को धारण किया जिसने उनकी सुदंरता को बर्बाद कर दिया और मुसीबत में डाल दिया”। यह वर्णन करने की आवश्यकता नहीं की उत्साही युवा को मुसीबत ने बुढ़ापा में ढकेल दिया, जहाँ खोने के आतंक वेदना के पुनः जमा करने के द्वारा अधिक महत्व प्रदान कर रहे थे।
3.Yayati, who found himself suddenly an old man, was still haunted by the desire for sensual enjoyment. He had five beautiful suns, all virtuous and accomplished. Yayati called them and appealed piteously to their affection: “The curse of your grandfather Sukracharya has made me unexpectedly and prematurely old. I have not had my feet of the joys of life, for not knowing what was in store for me. I lived a life of restraint, denying myself even lawful pleasures. One of you ought to bear the burden of my old age and give his youth in return. He who agrees to this and bestows his youth on me will be the ruler of my kingdom. I desire to enjoy life in the full vigour of youth.”
यायाती, जिन्होंने अपने को अचानक बूढ़ा पाया, अभी भी कामुक आनंद की इच्छा रखते थे। उनको पाँच सुंदर पुत्र थे, सभी सदाचारी और आज्ञाकारी । यायाती ने उन सबों को बुलाया और उनके स्नेह के लिए दयालुतापूर्वक आपह किया, “तुम लोगों के नाना शुकाचार्य के श्राप ने मुझे आशा के विपरीत और असमय बूढ़ा बना दिया है। मुझे मालूम नहीं कि मेरे पास जीवन का आनंद है या नहीं, मुझे नहीं पता कि मेरे लिए क्या रखा था। मैंने नियंत्रण में रखकर जीवन जीया, यहाँ तक कि नियमित आनंद को भी अस्वीकार . किया। तुममें से कोई एक मेरे बुढ़ापा का वजन ले ले और अपनी जवानी मुझे दे दे। वह जो इससे सहमत होता है और मुझपर अपनी जवानी अर्पण करता है वह मेरे राज्य का शासक होगा। मैं पूर्ण मानसिक अथवा शारीरिक युवा की तरह जीवन का आनंद । लेने की अभिलाषा रखता हूँ।

4.He first asked his eldest son to do his bidding. That son replied: “O great king, women and servants will mock at me if I were to take upon myself your old age. I cannot do so. Ask of my younger brothers who are dearer to you than myself.”
उन्होंने सबसे पहले अपने बड़े पुत्र को पूछने के लिए आमंत्रित किया। उस लड़के ने जवाब दिया, “ये महान राजा, यदि मैंने आपका बुढ़ापा ले लिया तो औरतें और नौकर मुझे चिढ़ायेंगे, मैं ऐसा नहीं कर सकता। मेरे छोटे भाईयों से पूछ लीजिए जो आपके लिए मुझसे ज्यादा प्रिय हैं”।
5.When the second son was asked, he gently refused with the word: “Father, you ask me to take up old age which destroys not only strength and beauty but also-as! see – wisdom. I am not strong enough to do so.”
जब दूसरे से पूछा गया, (उसने भी) विनम्रतापूर्वक इंकार कर दिया और कहा पिताजी, आप मुझे बुढ़ापा लेने को कह रहे हैं जो न केवल शक्ति और सुंदरता को बर्बाद करता है बल्कि जैसा में देखता हूँ-विवेक को भी । मैं ऐसा करने के लिए पर्याप्त मजबूत नहीं हूँ।”
6.The third son replied: “An old man cannot ride a horse or an elephant. His speech will falter What can I do in such a helpless plight? I cannot agree.”
तीसरे लड़के ने जवाब दिया, “एक बूढ़ा आदमी घोड़े या हाथी की सवारी नहीं कर सकता है। उसकी आवाज लड़खड़ायेगी। इस तरह की असहनीय दुर्दशा में मैं क्या कर सकता हूँ? मैं सहमत नहीं हो सकता।”

7.The king grew angry when he saw that his three sons had declined to do as he wished. He hoped for better from his fourth son, to whom he said: “You should take up my old age. If you exchange your youth with me, I shall give it back to you after some time and take back the old age with which I have been cursed.”
राजा यह देखकर कि उसके तीनों पुत्रों ने उसकी इच्छा के अनुरूप करने से इंकार कर दिया है, क्रोधित हो गया। वह अपने चौथे पुत्र से कुछ ज्यादा उम्मीद करता था, उससे उसने कहा, “तुम्हें मेरा बुढ़ापा ले लेना चाहिए। यदि तुम अपनी जवानी मुझसे ‘बदल लोगे, मैं तुम्हें कुछ समय के बाद इसे वापस दे दूंगा और बुढ़ापा जिससे मैं शापित हूँ वापस ले लूँगा।”
8.The fourth son begged to be forgiven, as this was a thing he could by no means consent to. An old man has to seek the help of others even to keep his body clean, a most pitiful plight. No much as he loved his father, could not do it.
चौथे पुत्र से भूलने के लिए प्रार्थना की गई, जैसे कि यह कोई वस्तु है जिसे बिना साधन के समझौता की जा सके। एक बूढ़ा आदमी दूसरे के सहारे पर निर्भर रहता है । यहाँ तक कि अपने शरीर को साफ-सुथरा रखने के लिए भी । एक बड़ा ही आतंकित दुर्दशा या दुर्दशा से आतंकित । नहीं, मैं इससे अधिक पिताजी से प्यार नहीं करता, वह ऐसा नहीं कर सकता।
9.Yayati was struck with sorrow at the refusal of the four sons. He paused for son. me and then supplicated his last son who had never yet opposed his wishes: “You most save me. I have got this old age with its wrinkles, debility and grey hairs as result of the curse of Sukracharya. I cannot bear it. If you take upon yourself these infirmities, I shall enjoy life for just a while more and then give you back your youth and resume my old age and all its sorrows. Puru, do not refuse as your elder brothers have done.” Puru, the youngest son, moved by filial love, said: “Father, I gladly give you my youth and relieve you of the sorrows of old age and the cares of State. Be happy.” Hearing these words Yayati became a youth. Puru, who accepted the old age of his father, ruled the kingdom and acquired great renown.
यायाती दुखों से विचलित हो गये जब उनके चारों पुत्रों ने इंकार कर दिया उन्हाने कुछ समय विश्राम किया और तब अपने अन्तिम पुत्र को विनय सहित प्रार्थमा की जो कभी उनकी इच्छाओं का विरोध नहीं किया था। तुम मुझे जरूर बचाओगे । मैंने बुढ़ापा झुरियों, दुर्बलता और भूरे रंग के बालों के साथ पाया हूँ जो शुक्राचार्य के श्राप का परिणाम है। मैं इसे धारण नहीं कर सकता। यदि तुम इन दुर्बलताओं को अपने ऊपर ले लोगे तो मैं कुछ और समय के लिए जीवन का आनंद ले लूँगा और तब तुम्हें तुम्हारी जवानी वापस दे दूंगा और अपना बुढ़ापा तथा सभी दुखों को स्वयं धारण कर लूंगा। पुरू, तुम अपने बड़े भाईयों की तरह इन्कार मत करना। पुरू, सबसे छोटा लड़का, संतानीय प्रेम से मुड़ा, कहा, “पिताजी, मैं खुशीपूर्वक अपनी जवानी आपको देता हूँ और आपको बुढ़ापा के सभी दुखों से मुक्त करता हूँ और राज्य के भार से भी खुश रहिए।” इन शब्दों को सुनते ही यायाती जवान हो गए। पुरू, जिसने अपने पिताजी के बुढ़ापा को स्वीकार किया धा, राज्य पर शासन किया और उसने काफी प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त की।

10 . Yuyali enjoyed life for long and, not satisfied, went later to the garden of Kubera and spent many years with an apsara maiden. After long years spent in vain efforts to quench desire by indulgence, the truth dawned on him. Returning to Puru, he said:
यायाती ने लम्बे समय तक जीवन का आनंद लिया, (किन्तु व) संतुष्ट नहीं हुए, तब कुबेर के बाग में एक सुंदर कुंवारी अप्सरा के साथ बहुत वर्ष बिताये। अपनी अभिलाषा की तुष्टि के लिए बहुत समय (काल) व्यर्थ में बिताने के बाद उन्ह सच्चाई का अनुभव होने लगा। पुरू के पास लौटने के बाद उन्होंने कहा।
11.”Dear son, sensual desire is never quenched by indulgence, any more than fire is by pouring ghee in it. I had heard and read this, but till now I had not realised it. No object of desire-com, gold, cattle and women – nothing can ever satisfy the desires of man. We can reach peace only by a mental pose beyond likes and dislikes. Such is the state of Brahman. Take back your youth and rule the kingdom wisely and well.”
“प्रिय पुत्र, कामुक प्यास की कभी तुष्टि नहीं हो सकती है इससे अधिक नहीं कि घी आग में डालने पर आग और भड़क जाती है। मैने ऐसा सुना और पढ़ा है, परन्तु अबतक मैं इसे महसूस नहीं किया। प्यास बुझाने के साधन–अन्न, सोना, मवेशी और औरत-ये कोई भी मनुष्य के प्यास नहीं बुझा सकते । हम पसंद और नापसंद से आगे केवल मन में पैदा कर शांति तक पहुँच सकते हैं। यही ब्राह्मण की स्थिति है। अपनी जवानी वापस लो और राज्य पर बुद्धिमतापूर्ण और अच्छा से शासन करो।”
12.With these words yayati took back his old age. Puru, who regained his yourth. was made king by yayati who retired to the forest. He spent his time there in austerities and in due cource attained heaven.
इन शब्दो के साथ उन्होनें अपना बुढ़ापा ले लिया। पुरू, जिसने अपनी जवानी पुन: प्राप्त कर ली, यायाती के द्वारा राजा बना दिया गया और यायाती जंगल की ओर चल दिए। वहाँ उन्होने तप में अपना समय बिताया और इस प्रकार वे स्वर्ग को प्राप्त किए। Class 9th English Chapter 2 Yayati Notes
