MY FIRST ROLE IN LIFE
पाठ का परिचय- ‘माई फर्ट रोल इन लाइफ’ छात्रा को सांस्कृतिक क्रियाकलाप के लिए उत्साहित करने के खयाल से लिखा गया है । लेखक, बखान करता है, कि, कैसे उसके स्कूल के छात्रों ने उसके साथ-साथ सावधानीपूर्वक, ‘श्रवण कुमार’ नामक नाटक, खेला।
I was in class IV when I gave my first stage performance in my school. The name of the play was ‘Shrawan Kumar’, and I was playing the character of Shrawan Kumar. The director was a student of class IX. The spectacles that he wore were enough to impress me with his capabilities. At his command, all of us, acting in the play, had brought dhotis and saris of our mothers and sisters in order to decorate the stage and give the effect of a flowing river.
A bucket full of water was kept at the place where Shrawan Kumar went to fetch water for his old blind parents. Two boys played the role of the blind parents of Shrawan Kumar. They had been instructed to keep their eyes closed all the time and to sit together in the centre of the stage, facing the audience. One of them, Bodhraj, playing the role of the mother, wore his mother’s sari, the aanchal of which would slide down many a time.
वाक्यार्थ— यह चौथी कक्षा थी जब मैंने अपने स्कूल में पहला नाटक खेला। खेल अवण कुमार’ था, और मैं श्रवण कुमार का चरित्र खेल रहा था। निर्देशक कक्षा IX का एक छात्र था। उसने जो चश्मा पहन रखा था वह मुझे उसकी क्षमता से प्रभावित करने में पूर्ण था। उसके आदेश पर, हम सबने, जो खेल म काम कर रह थे, अपनी धोती तथा अपनी माँ और बहनों की साड़ियाँ मंच को सजाने तथा बहता नदा का प्रभाव देने के लिए लाये थे।
पानी से भरी एक बाल्टी उस जगह रखी थी जहाँ श्रवण कुमार अपने बूढे अन्धे माता-पिता के लिए पानी लाने गया था। दो लड़कों ने श्रवण कुमार के अन्धे मातापिता का काम (अभिनय) किया था। उन लोगों को हमेशा अपनी आँखें बन्द किए रहने तथा मंच के केन्द्र में दर्शकों की ओर होकर बैठे रहने का निर्देश दिया गया था। उनमें एक बोधराज, जो माँ का अभिनय कर रहा था। अपनी माँ की साड़ी पहने हुए था, जिसका आँचल कई बार खिसक जाता था।
The curtain rose. On hearing the command of the blind parents – “Beta Shrawan Kumar, we are very thirsty” – I took a lota, touched their feet and walked towards the river. King Dasharath, entered the stage from behind the curtain. He moved about and twisted his moustache. On hearing some sound, he took out an arrow from the quiver on his back and exclaimed “Which animal is polluting the river water?”
I saw the arrow going straight towards the roof and I fell flat on the stage and started crying:
O cruel! what harm had I done to you?
Why did you strike the arrow in my bosom?
What wrong after all had I done to you?
Wretched! You shot me while fetching water.
वाक्यार्थ—पर्दा उठा। अन्धे मातापिता का आदेश सुनकर- “बेटा श्रवण कुमार हमलोग बहुत प्यासे हैं”-मैंने एक लोटा लिया, उनके पाँव छुए और नदी की और चल दिया। राजा दशरथ पर्दे के पीछे से प्रवेश करता है। वह मुड़ा और अपनी मल को मरोड़ा। कुछ आवाज सुनकर उसने अपने पीठ के तरकश से एक तीर निकाला और भावावेश में बोला, “कौन पशु नदी के पानी को गन्दा कर रहा है?” – मैंने तीर सीधे छत की ओर जाते देखा और मैं मंच पर गिर पड़ा तथा चिल्लाने लगा:

अरे निर्देयी मैंने तुम्हारा क्या बिगाड़ा?
तुमने मेरी छाती में तीर दिया मारा?
सब कुछ के बावजूद मेरी क्या गलती है?
दष्ट! तुम मुझे तब मारा जब मैं पानी ले रहा था।
The high pitch of my voice stunned the audience in the hall. I kept singing uninterruptedly but the song was so long that it seemed there was no end. Meanwhile, king Dasharath stood still like a statue with one leg in front and another at the back. He was waiting for me to complete my song, his bow facing me. If he had shot another arrow from his quiver, it would have corrected his earlier mistake but the director had instructed him to shoot only one arrow which he had already done.
I had hardly sung half the song when my voice went hoarse. I could see the audience laughing.
वाक्यार्थ—मेरी आवाज की तेजी ने कमरे में दर्शकों को स्तब्ध कर दिया। मैं बिना बाधा के गाना जारी रखा किन्तु गीत इतना लम्बा था कि उसका अन्त नहीं मालूम पड़ता था। इसी बीच, राजा दशरथ एक पैर आगे और दूसरा पीछे मूर्ति की तरह स्थिर खड़ा था। उसका धनुष मेरी ओर था और वह मेरा गीत समाप्त होने की प्रतीक्षा में था। यदि वह अपने तरकश से दूसरा तीर छोड़ता तो यह उसकी पहली भूल सुधार दिया होता किन्तु निर्देशक ने उसे केवल एक तीर छोड़ने का निर्देश दिया था जो वह पहले ही छोड़ चुका था। मैंने मुश्किल से आधा गीत गाया होगा कि मेरी आवाज भर्रा गयी। मैंने दर्शकों को हँसते देखा My First Role in Life in Hindi
The blind parents of Shrawan Kumar were finding it difficult to keep their eyes closed. Sometimes one and sometimes the other would open their eyes. On seeing this, the audience started giggling and remarked, “See, he has again opened his eyes.”
Suddenly the audience burst out laughing when they saw the “Pallu” of the saree falling down from the head of Bodhraj who was playing the role of Shrawan Kumar’s blind mother.
The shaven head of Bodhraj became visible. After a while when one of the parents of Shrawan Kumar was seen opening his eyes, somebody in the audience shouted:”Look, look again, he can see”.
वाक्यार्थ___श्रवण कुमार के अन्धे माता-पिता को अपनी आँखें बन्द रखने में कठिनाई हो रही थी। कभी-कभी एक और कभी-कभी दूसरा अपने आँखे खोल लेता। यह देखकर, दर्शक भद्दी हँसी हँसने लगे और मजाक उड़ाये, “देखो, उसने फिर अपनी आँखें खोल ली हैं।” ___अचानक दर्शक हँसी में फूट पड़े, जब उन्होंने देखा कि बोधराज जो श्रवण कुमार की अन्धी माता का अभिनय खेल रहा था उसके सिर से साड़ी का पल्लू’ गिर रहा था। ___बोधराज का बालकटा सिर दिखाई पड़ गया। कुछ देर बाद जब श्रवण कुमार के माता-पिता में एक अपनी आँखें-खोलता दिखा तब दर्शकों में कोई चिल्लाया : “देखो, देखो फिर, वह देख सकता है।” My First Role in Life in Hindi
Time and again laughter arose in the hall and noise of clapping could be heard. Then I stopped singing and acted as if dying in pain. The hall applauded with clapping. One teacher of my class who was part of the audience told my brother Bal Raj “Look, what your brother is doing?”..
After my death as Shrawan Kumar, a few more dialogues had to follow, King Dasharath speaking to my old parents and the old parents cursing the king. But I forgot everything and at once got up. The audience burst into peels of laughter. Somebody taunted, “Keep lying, keep lying.”
But I got so confused that I didn’t know what to do. I again lay down. This led to clapping which didn’t seem to end. Whistling, clapping and laughter and different sorts of sounds continued for long time to come.
This was my first role in life.
वाक्यार्थ-बार-बार कमरे में हँसी उठती थी और ताली की आवाज सुनाई पड़ती थी। तब मैने गाना छोड़ दिया और ऐसा अभिनय किया मानो दर्द से मर रहा था। कमरा तालियों से गूंज उठा। मेरी कक्षा का एक शिक्षक जो दर्शकों का अग था, मेरे भाई बलराज से बोला, “देखो तुम्हारा भाई क्या कर रहा है ?” ___ श्रवण कुमार के रूप में मेरे मरने के बाद, कुछ और बातचीत होना था, राजा | दशरथ मेरे बूढ़े माता-पिता से बोल रहे थे और बूढ़े माता-पिता राजा को शाप दे रहे थे। किन्तु मैं सबकुछ भूल गया और तुरंत उठ गया। दर्शक हँसी में फूट पड़े। किसी ने ताना मारा, “पड़े रहो, पड़े रहो।’ My First Role in Life in Hindi
किन्तु मैं इतना घबरा गया कि क्या करूँ, सो नहीं समझ सका । मैं फिर लेट गया। इसने ऐसी हँसी पैदा की जो रुकती नहीं मालूम पड़ी । सीटी, ताली और हँसी तथा विभिन्न प्रकार की आवाज बहुत देर तक आती रही ।
